The Colosseum could seat roughly 50,000 spectators and be emptied in minutes through 80 numbered entrances called vomitoria.
Commissioned by Emperor Vespasian around 72 AD and inaugurated by his son Titus in 80 AD, the amphitheatre rose on the drained lake of Nero's Golden House — a deliberate act of returning private land to the Roman public.
Built from travertine, tuff, and Roman concrete, the structure stands 48 metres high and measures 189 by 156 metres.
